Electric hot water systems

Electric hot water units remain the predominant choice in Australian households and have been produced domestically for more than a century. Although the basic design is much the same, contemporary models use better materials and thicker, more compact insulation around their storage cylinders. This reduces heat loss and boosts efficiency compared with units made before 2000.

These units work similarly to a kettle by using a heating element, and in Queensland they commonly come in three power ratings: 1.8kW, 2.4kW and 3.6kW (with occasional 4.8kW units in limited areas due to higher supply needs). The same ratings apply across major manufacturers such as Rheem, Dux, Vulcan, AquaMAX and Rinnai.

Bear in mind that different element wattages don’t alter the overall energy rating. For example, a 1.8kW element uses half the power of a 3.6kW element but requires roughly twice the time to bring the same volume of water to the same temperature.

Electric hot water systems are generally built with mild steel tanks coated internally with vitreous enamel and safeguarded by a sacrificial anode. There are stainless steel models available too, while the older copper-style heaters are no longer manufactured.

Nambour Hot Water supplies and installs dependable electric hot water systems for every household requirement, and our Nambour plumber team handles installation, repairs and service for gas and electric systems.

Customer Testimonials

Couldn't recommend a better business to sort out your water problems. SunCity Hot Water did a fantastic and professional job, experienced tradesman showed up the next day after receiving a quote over the phone of exactly how much my new hot water system will be. There was no surprises once the job was done I knew exactly how much it will cost, no estimates or assumptions. Thank you!

Replaced and relocated electric hot water system with a heat pump at a competitive price. Sun City Hot Water did a fantastic job. Were very easy to deal with from quote to finish. Took the time to understand what I wanted and explain how existing plumbing needed to be modified to relocate. On installation day they phoned ahead (always appreciated) and reconfirmed new placement etc before starting. Work was very neat and professional. Made sure that everything was working and cleaned up before leaving.

Fantastic and prompt service for a hot water system that had failed, imagined that I was up for new system, but the technician was up front and diagnosed the problem and repaired the unit for minimal cost. Highly recommended, will be using these guys when time comes to replace the unit.

An electric hot water system

An electric hot water system can make up roughly one-third of your electricity costs if you don’t have solar PV exporting to the grid. On tariff 11, which supplies power at the standard rate 24 hours a day for general power and lighting, running costs are higher. Systems on tariff 33 receive power for about 18 hours each day, commonly switching off between 6–9am and 6–9pm. Tariff 31 is the lowest-cost option, supplying electricity during off-peak periods, usually from about 9pm to 6am. Bear in mind that tariff 31 is typically unsuitable for hot water cylinders under 250 litres when the household has two or more occupants. Electric hot water units come in many storage sizes, from compact 25-litre units for kitchens and single basins through to 400-litre tanks for larger homes. The guide below outlines common tank sizes and suitable household use (actual needs will vary by usage): 50L & 80L: Best for 1–2 people in small units. These sizes generally operate only on tariff 11 and aren’t suitable for off-peak tariffs. 125L: Suits 2–3 people in a unit or small townhouse when on tariff 33. 160L: Suits 2–4 people in a unit or small townhouse when on tariff 33. 250L: Suitable for 2–4 people on tariff 31 in most three-bedroom homes, and can serve up to 6 people on tariff 33. 315L: Good for 3–5 people on tariff 31, or up to 7 people on tariff 33. 400L: Ideal for 4–7 people on tariff 31, up to 9 people on tariff 33, and as many as 12 people on tariff 11.
